I am Mikko Almgren, a city councilor from Kotka in Kymenlaakso and also a parliamentary candidate.
I entered politics because I want to make everyday life smoother and decision-making more humane. I believe that the best solutions emerge by listening to people and understanding their real needs—not by making decisions far removed from everyday life.
Cooperation between different parties is more important than ever before during this difficult time in Finland. I want to be a bridge builder, even though we do and will have different opinions.
My Christian values have helped and continue to help me understand people’s needs and different perspectives broadly. Be yourself, and I will be myself. Let us respect each other when we share common views and also when they differ. Fairness, courage, and love help us move forward, together. I want to do my part to guarantee freedom of religion and speech for everyone, which has been rapidly eroding in Finland. I see nothing good in canceling another person if they express a different opinion or view from your own. Some current politicians are so entrenched in their own views that a constructive culture of dialogue does not emerge. Just look at the political debates on A-studio. They leave one feeling frustrated.
In the city council, I have strived to work constructively and seek solutions that unite different perspectives. Decision-making must be democratic. Ultimately, only through cooperation can sustainable results be achieved.
Strengthening Finland’s vitality is critical and important. I want to promote employment, support entrepreneurship, and ensure that regions experiencing structural changes also have future prospects. I want to advance opportunities for growth and development, particularly in my constituency. I believe in long-term work where results are achieved step by step—not with empty promises, but with realistic solutions.
Education is the foundation of Finnish society, and therefore its quality must be invested in. I want to ensure that children and young people have equal opportunities to learn and develop. This means sufficient resources for schools and appreciation of teachers’ work, as well as developing education to meet future needs.
In social and health services, I consider it important that services are accessible and humane. Everyone must receive help when they need it and be treated equally in different services. I want to promote solutions where quality is maintained and costs remain under control.
Environmental issues are important to me. I believe in practical actions that support sustainable development—for example, in energy solutions, mobility, and urban planning. Environmental responsibility and the economy can go hand in hand when decisions are made wisely. As it says in my favorite book: “cultivate and protect.”
I consider myself approachable and straightforward. It is important to me to stay connected with people and listen to feedback. I want to do politics that is open, understandable, and above all for us people.
I am running for Parliament because I want to bring local-level experience to national decision-making. I promise to do my work honestly and persistently, and to build a Finland where people have the opportunity for a good life—regardless of where they live.
