The City of Helsinki’s plans to redraw school district boundaries have made school shopping a nationwide topic of discussion. The debate is about much more than which school building a child attends. Schools should be a place where children and families from different backgrounds are treated equally and where the starting point for education is the core mission of schools and jointly approved curricula.
Parents must have the possibility to choose
If the quality, classroom discipline, or safe developmental environment of the local school cannot be secured, parents must have the right to seek an alternative for their child in which learning and safe development are realized as well as possible.
The goal of good school policy should not be to prevent school shopping, but to ensure that families have no need for school shopping.
